Kids’ Chance Awareness Week Celebrates November 12th-16th

The Louisiana Bar Foundation (LBF) and the workers’ compensation industry celebrate Kids’ Chance Awareness Week this week, November 12th-16th. The Kids’ Chance Scholarship Program provides scholarships to the children of Louisiana workers who have been killed or permanently and totally disabled in an accident compensable under a state or federal workers’ compensation act or law.
The Kids’ Chance Scholarship Program was started in 2004, and is administered by the Louisiana Bar Foundation. The program is governed by a committee representing a cross-section of the state’s legal and workers’ compensation communities. Since 2004, the LBF Kids’ Chance program has awarded 290 scholarships totaling $664,100. The first Kids’ Chance program began in Georgia in 1988 and now there are programs in 43 states.
This year 15 scholarships were given totaling $50,500. The program also raises funds from industry events, notably LWCC’s annual Kids’ Chance invitational golf tournament which raised over $40,000 this year.
Louisiana Bar Foundation President, Mike Street emphasized during Awareness Week that it’s all about making it right wherever we can. “The Louisiana Bar Foundation Kids’ Chance program believes that we can make a significant difference in the lives of children affected by a workplace injury by helping them pursue and achieve their educational goals,” he said.
Collectively, Kids’ Chance organizations have awarded more than 6,500 scholarships across the country, totaling over $20,000,000. Kids’ Chance Awareness Week is designed to increase visibility and spread the word about Kids’ Chance scholarship opportunities. This is the fourth annual Awareness Week.
Yesterday, LBF hosted an event at Urban South brewery in New Orleans. The owner of the brewery, Jacob Landry (pictured above giving a tour of his brewery to industry folks last night), was one of the first recipients of a Kids’ Chance scholarship in Louisiana. Over 35 attendees were present to celebrate the program’s successes and look toward the future.
