Our Work Plays a Vital Role in Civil Legal Aid

Louisiana Citizens face serious legal challenges every day. While the Sixth Amendment guarantees the right to counsel in criminal proceedings, civil litigants are not assured representation unless they can afford it. In Louisiana over 75% of civil litigants are forced to represent themselves because they cannot afford an attorney. This effectively puts justice out of reach for low-income citizens and undermines a fundamental principle of our state: Union, Justice, Confidence. Without legal assistance, hundreds of thousands of our citizens face life changing consequences and systemic injustice
