The Louisiana Bar Foundation Kids’ Chance Scholarship Program is the state chapter of a national organization that awards scholarships to the children of Louisiana workers who have been killed or permanently and totally disabled in an accident compensable under a state or federal Workers' Compensation Act or law.
Each year one of every 50 Louisiana workers will be injured on the job. Some of these work accidents will result in death or permanent and total disability. Families of these individuals will face difficult challenges as they struggle to overcome the financial burden of these losses. Often a child's dream of going to college is crushed because of unexpected income loss and/or the necessity to forfeit an education for work to financially support other family members. To these children, the future can appear frightening. Already confronting difficult emotions, they often have to confront the hurdle of funding their education beyond high school.

The patient fell and his father suffered a severe dislocation and rotator cuff tear with three bulging discs in his cervical spine. Aaron's major is German, with a minor in Ancient History. His career objective is to be a pilot in the United State Air Force. He has worked very hard to be the highest ranking Air Force Cadet in New Orleans, he said, "Kids' Chance has and will continue to, make an education possible for me. I want to fly and protect our freedom, and Kids' Chance will make that possible."
Bryce, Breaux Bridge
Bryce's dad was permanently disabled in a vehicular accident while at work when he was hit from behind by another employee. He has had two surgeries including a three level fusion. He also has four additional injured discs in his neck. Bryce is getting a bachelor's degree in Industrial Technology. His career objective is to work in the oil industry-pneumatics (electrical specialty). "My father lost his livelihood when I was at a young age," said Bryce, "without TOPS and Kids' Chance my family would not have the means of sending me to college." Bryce's sister Leah is also a Kids' Chance Scholarship recipient.

"My whole life, we depended on my mom working full-time, my dad's workman's compensation for five years and social security to make ends meet. My mom has struggled to provide opportunities for me and my younger sister. This scholarship takes a huge burden off my mom," said Caleb. Caleb's major is Christian/Biblical studies.

Brittany plans to graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree, then apply to dental school. She wants to be an orthodontist. Tiarra's dad was a welder. In 1990, while at work, he was pinned between two pipes and couldn't move, as a result he became permanently disabled. Because of her dad's disability, Tiarra and her sisters all want to work in the medical profession. Tiarra plans to attend Southern University - Baton Rouge and study physical therapy.

He is permanently in a wheelchair with multiple health problems. This accident has been a tragic event in Kristen's life, but she is optimistic about the future. "I feel that my father's disability has taught me to be independent and accept life's challenges with a positive attitude," said Kristen. Kristen will use her Kids' Chance Scholarship to help pay for her college expenses at Louisiana Tech, where her major is elementary education.

He has undergone multiple surgeries and procedures, and many hours of physical therapy, but still, he is unable to walk without his brace and crutch. Craig ranked 8th in his graduating class at Negreet High School; other honors and achievements include Who's Who Among High School Students, National Honor Roll, The National Society of High School Scholars and Quiz Bowl for two years. Craig will attend Northwestern State University, and major in accounting.

She has also competed in beauty pageants. Her father, a U.S. Postal Worker, burst two discs in his back while unloading a trailer of mail catalogs. Chianti's father has struggled financially, emotionally and physically. Chianti knows that her father wishes her to continue her education, but that he is unable to help financially. Chianti will attend Bossier Parish Community College and hopes to become an x-ray technician. Chianti says, "the Kids' Chance Scholarship will help me enter college and also help make my goals in life come true."
