Louisiana Bar Foundation Grantees 2009

At its November 7 meeting the LBF Board of Directors awarded more than $3.4 million in grants for 2009. These grants were awarded in the traditional areas of legal assistance to the poor, law-related education, loan repayment assistance, building capital development and community partnership panels. The LBF also awarded grants in two new areas: children's legal services and supplemental pay for public interest attorneys and staff.

The Children's Legal Services grants help provide legal assistance to needy children in areas of law which affect their safety, well-being, and future development. Annual grants are available to organizations providing direct legal representation of children, in matters ranging from delinquency to access to special education, mental health, and foster care services; organizations engaging in impact litigation and/or systemic legal reform efforts on behalf of children; organizations that provide lay advocacy for children in legal proceedings, such as CASA; and organizations that assist with the administration of justice with respect to children, such as Teen Courts or other court-ordered programs.

Iberia Teen Court -- New Iberia
Iberia Teen Court was established in 1993 to provide first-time juvenile offenders with an alternative to the juvenile justice system. Misdemeanor and felony offenders, age 10-17 are eligible to participate in the program. The juvenile offenders must acknowledge their guilt in the commission of a crime in order to participate in the program. The juveniles who participate in this program would most likely otherwise, because of under staffing of juvenile departments, over crowding of the juvenile dockets, etc would simply be released to their parents with no further consequences or until they commit a more serious act and become repeat offenders.

The Loan Repayment Assistance Program provides one-year loans, up to $5,000 to public interest attorneys with law school debt employed by LBF grantees.
